As a member of the World Ocean Council since 2021 – a cross-sectoral industry alliance committed to sustainable ocean stewardship – Holcim is scaling up its actions to protect marine environments.
Sailing the globe for circularity
Team Holcim-PRB is sailing around the world with the GO CIRCULAR campaign as a call to action to accelerate circular building and living from sea to city.
The data that Team Holcim-PRB and the other crews collected provided the world’s leading science organizations with valuable information, in real-time, to paint a more accurate picture of what is happening to the ocean and the important role it plays in maintaining a healthy planet. This vital data is helping scientists get more information that is currently lacking on two of the biggest threats to the health of the seas: the impact of climate change and plastic pollution.
Holcim has participated in the world’s two premiere round-the-world sailing races and plans to sail in the Vendée Globe 2024 and The Ocean Race Europe 2025.

Preserving marine habitats
Holcim has promoted sustainable oceans for many years. Our bioactive patented bilayer concrete is specially designed to help rehabilitate marine ecosystems.
We are working on the development of bio-receptive concrete to reconcile the development of marine and coastal infrastructure with ecology. Currently, constructing artificial reefs is a lengthy and complicated process. We set up a ground breaking dedicated laboratory in the Holcim Innovation Center to shorten this process. We can conduct a quick material assessment in our labs using all the local project parameters (for example, temperature, salinity, biomass), which allows us to reduce the monitoring period from years to weeks. Our lab work will also help us to produce concrete that will allow for faster biological colonization and that can be applied to artificial reefs, breakwaters, shore protection and port infrastructure

Removing plastic waste from coastal areas
The Circular Explorer is a 100% solar-powered catamaran built in partnership with One Earth One Ocean. The first of its kind, this groundbreaking recycling machine recovers marine plastic waste in the world's oceans and rivers.
The Circular Explorer is building awareness through educational toolkits, events and campaigns. It has an average waste collection rate of 500kg per day.
